CM Punk's "respect" storyline has two major flaws/storyline possibilities. I'll explain all.
Flaw #1: He talks about the fans needing to show him. Last time I checked Punk, we still cheer you even though you're a heel. So, that argument is invalid. Flaw #2: He's talking about demanding respect, yet he's disrespecting the WWE legends (even though most of them don't deserve to be in it in the first place) If you want respect, you gotta show respect. Even though it's a storyline, if they wanna make it seem real they need to have the respect thing coming from Punk as well. storyline possibility #1: AJ makes a triple threat match at Night of Champions for the WWE Championship, Cena vs Lawler vs Punk. Punk retains and continues his respect storyline all the way to the RR13 where Rock beats him. Storyline possibility #2: Punk beats Cena at Night of Champions, than feuds with Mysterio, Kane, and/or Orton for the rest of the year, drops a pipe bomb on The Rock on the first RAW of 2013, than Rock beats him ar RR13.

I actually agree with Flaw #1. He tried putting over that there is still a "sea of green" in the crowd but it's not like his little lightning bolt shirts haven't been selling. Plus, he doesn't get mixed reactions like Cena does as a face.
I've probably said it a few times, but yeah I like CM Punk more as a heel, but this angle is a bunch of crap. If he's going to turn heel, he needs to do it head on. He hasn't really turned on the fans yet so it makes for a confusing reaction.

At first I thought the original poster was sort of over-thinking it and was going to suggest giving it time. But in reading Oulette's post he echoed a sentiment I was feeling last week when reading the write up -- This angle is a bunch of crap. If you're going to turn him heel you need to do it head on rather than what feel like teases, etc.
I think Punk could fix problem by ripping a scathing promo on the crowd about what 'respect' is. "Respect isn't cheering me or buying my tee shirt. Respect is leaving me the hell alone while I'm traveling from one gig to another to entertain you worthless turds. Respect is not tweeting at me 100 times begging for some pathetic reply like a 10 year old loser".....He could also go down the 'self-respect' line and essentially say the fans have none for themselves. Same as the straight-edge gimmick but you don't have to go with drugs and booze per se. Something like, "And then there's this thing called self-respect - which apparently most of you in this arena know nothing about. I get up every morning at 5 am and spend hours in the gym to ensure I stay healthy and in shape. I spend hours a week watching film, trying to perfect my craft....and I'm looking at a twenty-five year old guy with man boobs wearing an ill fitting tee shirt and getting half a chub watching his favorite superstars. You ever think you could've spent this two hours working that stuffed crust cheese out of your ears and getting yourself in shape? No, because you have no respect for yourself. And, as a fan, I bet you think Flair is the original Naitch....Show me the respect I, and those that came before me deserve and actually educate yourselves on this business instead of whacking it to dirt sheets."
Again, stay away from the straight edge stuff but reference issues it's known Punk has with his privacy being invaded, etc. I think invoking straight edge would just be too much 'more of the same'.

But I do agree with you Punk should be allowed to cut a promo and turn himself heel the way he see's fit not this cheeseball WWE creative way that involves smacking around a 62 year old commentator. This is a good example of the WWE not allowing the talent to just be themselves, instead they are handed a very detailed script which they are supposed recite word for word, it sucks.

The problem is that Punk makes WWE money as a face. I think the idea is to have Punk play this middle ground where he's a heel to the other superstars but maintains a level of face-ness with the audience. Part of this is the whole "I never turned on the crowd" deal they're running with Lawler. Now, they could always turn it around and have Punk say "I never turned on you... but now you've turned on me" sort of thing if they want him to go full-fledged as a heel but I just think that, so long as Punk is still making them a certain level of money through merch sales, he's going to play this middle ground.
WWE needs a big name for Cena to feud with now and for The Rock to beat next January and with Orton in the dog house right now, Punk's their best option for that guy... but I don't think the long-term plan is for Punk to be a major heel. I didn't think he'd even turned at all when he attacked The Rock- that's how sure I was.
The absolute best way of someone ever getting over as a top babyface is for the crowd themselves to choose to cheer them when they're a heel (see Austin, Rock, Cena). I think that's the idea here, have Punk play this gritty heel, whilst not antagonising the fans as a way of building him up as a top babyface long-term. He's proven he can shift a lot of Merch- WWE should want him as a babyface because of that.

I like your thinking there.

I think now Punk is aligned with Heyman, the fans will boo him a bit more as Heyman is a heat magnet. A couple of promos by Heyman and I think Punk will be well and truly a heel. I'm hoping Punk stays heel long enough to get his Wrestlemania match against Austin - although that may not be until WM30.

Yeah, seems that way. I guess we'll see what they've got planned but there's gonna be a contingent in every audience that will refuse to boo Punk regardless. Might give us a good idea if Bischoff was on target with that 5% call.

Yeah, the addition of Heyman changes things for the better. I still haven't loved this turn since Punk never fully turned, again like I said, seemed like WWE was trying to have their cake and eat it by having Punk be a popular wrestler with a heel persona. It just confuses the crowd.
I think Heyman will help sway many of the fans who would have continued to cheer Punk no matter what during this heel run. The pairing of the two is intriguing.
